The writer's intimate acquaintance with the iron industry in Alabama began in 1888. Since that time he conducted a pri vate metallurgical laboratory in Birmingham and served for four years as chemist and metallurgist for the Tennessee Coal Iron Railroad Company, and the Birmingham Rolling Mill Company.
During the last years, however, he has been Director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology of the Uni versity of Texas.
