Synopsis

Excerpt from Report of Cases of Controverted Elections, in the Fourteenth Parliament of the United Kingdom

This was the first General Election since the passing of Sir Robert Peel's Act, which established new regulations for the appointment of Election Committees and the trial of Election Petitions, and came into operation at the end of the Session of 1839. The Session of 1842, therefore, afforded the first opportunity for trying, on an extended scale, the working of the new machinery.
