La gaieté de Béranger, moins vive et moins communice tive que celle de Panard et de Désaugiers, ressemble au comique de Molière, souvent si sérieux quand il nous fait rire de nous - memes et des autres; mais, comme le con templateur, il a pensé au peuple et a tant de gens comme il faut qui sont peuple aussi. Le Petit homme gris, La Mère aveugle, Le Voisin, sont des farces que Béranger nous donne après de graves comédies. Le rigorisme a repris dans ces tableaux à la Teniers des traits qui vont jusqu'à la li cence, mais la cour du plus majestueux acteur dela royauté que l'on ait vu sur le trône passait à Molière bien des liber tés que notre pmderie de nouvelle date repousoernît aujour d'hui, sans qu'on puisse inférer justement de ce scrupule que nos moeurs soient préférablesà celles de nos devanciere. Avouons toutefois qu'il serait à souhaiter, malgré la verve et la poésie dont elles brillent, que certaines chansons, em poeintoe d'une liberté vraiment cynique ne tigmassent pas parmi les belles et morales compositions de Béranger du moins faudrait - ii qu'elles fussent imprimées dans un volume A part.
