A disturbance of the normal relations of the parts, such as is brought about by the removal of one of them or by the changing of the external environment, must lead to changes which if the system is not too rigid can give important light upon the normal relations of the parts. This is the fundamental consideration which lies at the base of all experimental biology and m the broad sense of the term all such studies are studies in compensatory regulation.
