Arius became a very popular preacher and so great was his inﬂuence that he was considered the logical candidate for the bishopric upon the death of Achillas. His bitter enemy, Alexander, however, was chosen, and his enemies have ascribed his heretical opinions to his disappoint ment over his failure to obtain the coveted honor. Such explanation, however, seems unjust in view of his early training in Asia Minor where Similar doctrines had long been maintained.
