Isolated kneeling trenches for two men should have a length of one pace, but the isolated riﬂe pit or shelter standing should be 5 feet in length. This last readily accommodates three men, two of whom can fire over the embankment, while the third standing in the 4-foot trench protects the ﬂanks.
