Thus at the great battle of Arbela, which'terminated the Persian empire, the appearance of the Persian army was that of a Splendid cavalcade, strikingly contrasting with the appearance of their fees, the almost naked and hardy Grecian soldiers. Ancient and enervated Egypt was overrun, and for a long time governed by the rude shepherd kings on her borders. Greece, sunk in luxury, succumbed to the Roman arms Rome fell beneath the barbarian Goths and Vandals. Yet later, and last of all, the beautiful city of Constantinople, capital of the eastern empire, yielded to the arms of the warlike Osmanlis, a horde of Tartars from Turkistan.
