The chronological order may thus be a little disturbed, but the order of the subjects treated of is better pre served by this plan. Here, also, it may be noticed, once for all, that the author makes no pretension to the scientific treatment of his subject; his task is the much humbler one of describing the lot of the poor settler, and, in a word, the trials and triumphs of industry.

About the Author
Alexander M. Ross grew up on a farm in Ontario and served in the Royal Canadian Artillery in World War II. Now Professor Emeritus at the University of Guelph, he has written "A Part of Me Is Missing" (2002 Borealis) and "Slow March to a Regiment" (2004). He has co-authored a revision of "The College on the Hill" (1999), a history of the Ontario Agricultural College.
