Excerpt from The Legacy of Greece and Rome
This must be my apology for the second chapter, on the Early Civilisations of Egypt, the Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean. I have no intention of portraying these civilisations: I merely wish to indicate the context of Greece and Rome in the history of the ancient world. On similar grounds'i would attempt to justify the almost hopeless effort to gather up in two brief chapters (viii and IX) the main threads of interest in the history of the Decline and Fall of Home.
