Excerpt from The Steeping of Barley: A Comparison of the Effects of the Use of Hard and Soft Waters
For the purpose of making experiments to determine the amount of substance going into solution, the malt - house operations during the steeping andfsprnuting process were adhered to as much as was possible under the circumstances. Previous to entering the steep tank the barley is washed, and this may be accomplished in several ways. One method employs an injector-shaped vessel, where the grain and water are allowed simultaneously to enter, being there thorough ly mixed and the grain washed, whereupon both pass over a sieve, where the grain is intercepted and transferred to the steep-tank.
