Of improved land, the area returned as tilled, including fallow and grass in rotation (whether pasture or meadow) is 7, 997, 541 acres, as com pared with acres in 1880, and the area of permanent meadows, permanent pastures, orchards and vineyards is returned at acres, as compared with 737 acres returned in 1880.

The following table shows, for the State and each county, the num ber of acres of improved land as returned at the censuses of 1884 and 1880.
