Vladimir's true identity is finally revealed, to the general's fury. Complications ensue, but Vladimir and Lydia are eventually united through the ingenuity of an American newspaper correspondent, who also helps the other characters escape. The book combines themes of love, war, and mistaken identity, and provides a glimpse into the complex social and political landscape of 19th-century Russia.
