To promote improved models for the future, we have highlighted investigations using sound approaches to model development, testing, and interpretation so that others might follow that lead. A second purpose therefore was to address several important aspects of model building, including proper statistical methods, errors in habitat measurements, and major biological assumptions of models. Finally, we discuss the present uses of models and how researchers might develop more useful models for fishery managers.
