Review

Lack of sleep for new parents is a nightmare.

Pacing up and down in the early hours with a crying baby is a lonely time. Looking out of the window, it seems you are the only person in the world not safely tucked up in bed. Memories of unbroken nights sleep seem a million years away.

So help in the form of Prisca Middlemiss' book Sleep must be welcome.

It is comforting to know that, according to Middlemiss, young children awaken two million people--a different story from that told in the baby clinics where every other mum or dad assures you their child has been sleeping through the night from 12 weeks.

The author offers advice on settling the baby into a routine. Although there is little new in the book, the information is easy to find and it will not take hours to read--an important consideration for a new parent.

Also discussed are reasons for a child waking in the night and possible solutions to the problem.

Don't expect any miracle cures for sleepless children. For example, sleep training (also known as controlled crying) advocated by Middlemiss is simply a sophisticated version of leaving the baby to cry, perhaps with a little less guilt for the parents.

In the end, turning a poor sleeper into a good sleeper requires determination and commitment whichever method you choose, but the book is valuable in showing you that you are not alone in this nightmare. --Carole Butterworth
