This fourth edition contains new material by Geoffrey Kichenside which examines accidents of the modern era, against the background of revolutionary changes on Britain's railways - the introduction of new equipment, operating practices, power signalling and locomotives capable of speeds of 150 mph - and concludes that, no matter how many ingenious safety devices are invented, safety on the rails depends largely, as it has always done, on the skill and vigilance of the railwayman. The book contains a chronological index of accidents mentioned in the text: from 1830 to 1880 and has 14 photographic illustrations.
