Paperback. Condition: Good. If Casino Royale introduced James Bond to the world with a quiet game of baccarat and a sharp dinner jacket, Live and Let Die wastes very little time proving that Ian Fleming had no intention of allowing his hero a peaceful career. This time the stakes are larger, the villains stranger, the locations more exotic and the body count rather less conducive to a relaxing holiday brochure. Originally published in 1954, this 1973 Pan Books edition presents Fleming?s second Bond novel, sending 007 across New York, Florida and the Caribbean on the trail of the formidable Mr Big?a ruthless criminal whose operations stretch from organised crime to Cold War intrigue. Bond?s investigation leads through jazz clubs, gangsters, hidden treasure, dangerous waterways and enough close calls to make even the most comprehensive travel insurance policy quietly reconsider its terms and conditions. One of the pleasures of returning to Fleming?s original novels is discovering just how different they are from the films they inspired. Literary Bond is a more grounded and thoughtful figure than his cinematic counterpart, relying less on improbable gadgets and more on observation, nerve and an impressive willingness to remain calm while almost everyone around him appears intent on shortening his life expectancy. The action is no less exciting for being more believable; indeed, it often feels considerably more suspenseful. There is a wonderful irony in Bond?s profession. Secret agents are, by definition, supposed to remain inconspicuous. James Bond, meanwhile, has somehow become one of the most recognisable fictional characters ever created. Even in these early novels, Fleming displays an uncanny ability to make espionage seem simultaneously glamorous and profoundly hazardous. One moment Bond is dining elegantly, the next he is wondering whether the local wildlife has been recruited by the opposition. Fleming also possessed a remarkable gift for atmosphere. Whether describing the humid streets of Harlem, the dazzling sunshine of Florida or the mysterious waterways of Jamaica, he creates settings so vivid that they become characters in their own right. They are places where danger seems to lurk just beyond the next doorway, yet somehow remain irresistibly attractive all the same. It is a literary balancing act that few thriller writers have managed to equal. Naturally, modern readers may notice aspects of the novel that reflect the attitudes and conventions of the era in which it was written. Like many works of mid-twentieth-century popular fiction, it serves not only as an adventure story but also as a snapshot of its time. Read in that context, it offers both an engaging thriller and an interesting glimpse into the world that shaped one of literature?s most enduring spies. This copy is in Good condition, remaining clean, solid and perfectly suited for another mission. It is an excellent addition for Fleming collectors, Bond enthusiasts or anyone curious to experience the original adventures before decades of cinematic reinvention added exploding pens, invisible cars and enough product placement to furnish a small department store. Whether you are working your way through the complete Bond canon or simply fancy spending a few evenings in the company of Britain?s most famous fictional intelligence officer, Live and Let Die remains an exhilarating reminder of why Ian Fleming?s novels continue to captivate readers more than seventy years after they first appeared. Sold, as always, by Crappy Old Books?because before Bond became a blockbuster, he was simply a very well-dressed man having an extraordinarily bad week. Seller Inventory # 6854
