For business executives, complexity and uncertainty often characterizes the competitive landscape and strategic choices surrounding technology and innovation. In this fascinating and enjoyable new read, e-business expert Dave Rochlin dispels many of the myths, and outlines the primary factors which determine why some firms thrive while others flop in adopting or introducing new technology. Drawing from his exhaustive research as well as his personal experiences as consultant, executive, and educator, Rochlin delivers practical advice to give readers a thorough understanding of the complex high-tech environment. He also provides numerous examples from other prominent experts in the field, enabling readers to learn from the mistakes and successes of those who have blazed the high-tech trail before them. Offering a holistic view of innovation, technology, and competitive strategy, this unique book blends contemporary and classical research theory, a historical perspective, and the current best practices from industry.

This would be a good text to adopt for the following reasons: readability, depth and breadth of coverage of topics, very thorough coverage of competitive advantage, vignettes (Boxes) make good class discussion points to drive home concepts, the text belongs in every office library so students would not sell it at the end of class. If it were available January 1, I would use it in the spring terms that starts in January.
"Hunter or Hunted" explores the strategies and decisions of managers working in technology and in technology-dependent industries. Designed to be relevant to a broad audience - to aspiring IT professionals and general managers - Rochlin moves easily among the viewpoints of the researcher and the practitioner. First-person interviews conducted by the author with a variety of tech-world luminaries add an especially vivid real-world dimension to the text as do the numerous short (and sometimes surprising) cases that appear throughout. While technology-driven competition is predictably intense, even the most agile of firms can find themselves at the wrong end of the riflescope. Hence the title, which underscores Rochlin's arguments about the nature of competition in technology-driven markets wherein the hunter can all too readily become the hunted.
