Presents a history of the land now called California, from the time before the first Europeans arrived, to the dominance of Mexico, to the ultimate war that brought the territory under American control

How California was 'conquered' by American forces in 1846.
BEAR FLAG RISING is about one of the forgotten episodes in American history: how California fell into American hands in 1846. The "conquest" of Mexico's Alta California began before "Mr. Polk's War" with Mexico was declared, when a handful of American settlers in the Sacramento Valley staged a revolt in the town of Sonoma, raised the Bear Flag standard in the town plaza and proclaimed the vast territory's independence. Soon after this near-bloodless coup, American naval forces arrived to make the civilian rising a military reality. Central to the story is the interaction between three men divided over an ostensibly common purpose--the conquest of California: Commodore Robert Stockton of the Navy, the explorer John C. Fremont, and Army General Stephen W. Kearny.
