Investigating the disappearance of Oliver Cooper, Inspector Alvarez has just ruled out suicide when Cooper's decidedly dead body shows up in his own home with a smashed watch that may indicate his time of death and lead to his killer.

Art dealer Oliver Cooper lives on the island of Mallorca until White, a Mafia hit man, turns up on the island demanding that he pay back a large sum of money he swindled from White's currently imprisoned boss. When Cooper disappears and his car is found abandoned, the tireless Inspector Alvarez is called in to investigate.
To Alvarez's surprise, Cooper's body finally turns up in his own home- and it's plain that his death is neither suicide nor accident. On the trail for suspects, Alvarez discovers that Cooper's beautiful widow is having an affair, and that the dead man's peasant neighbour also had cause to hate Cooper. So while there is no shortage of people with a motive for murder, when it transpires that Cooper's watch smashed at the time of death it seems that they have alibis. But is the evidence to be believed...?
Another delightful and witty novel featuring Roderic Jeffries' much-loved detective, the philosophical Inspector Alvarez.
