Within the next decade, many thousands of U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons are slated to be retired as a result of nuclear arms reduction treaties and unilateral pledges. A hundred tons or more of plutonium and tons of highly enriched uranium will no longer be needed. The management and disposition of these fissile materials, the essential ingredients of nuclear weapons, pose urgent challenges for international security.
This book offers recommendations for all phases of the problem, from dismantlement of excess warheads, through intermediate storage of the fissle materials they contain, to ultimate disposition of the plutonium.

On January 24, 1994, the National Academy of Sciences released a major policy report recommending a comprehensive approach to the handling of the large stocks of weapons plutonium no longer needed with the end of the Cold War. The study, entitled "Management and Disposition of Excess Weapons Plutonium," presents detailed recommendations on a reciprocal U.S.-Russian plutonium regime, which would include: declarations on total inventories of weapons and fissile materials, monitored dismantlement of weapons, safeguarded interim storage of materials, and long-term disposal of excess plutonium either by vitrification into large logs with high-level waste or by use as fuel in existing reactors without future reprocessing. The report, which was originally requested by General Brent Scowcroft and subsequently supported by the Clinton administration, was conducted by the Academy's Committee on International Security and Arms Control (CISAC) as a special study project chaired by Professor Wolfgang Panofsky, and supported by a detailed analysis of reactor options by a separate panel, chaired by Professor John Holdren, chairman of CISAC. Relevant government agencies have been briefed on its recommendations. Seller Inventory # 54572
