Hardback. Condition: Good. Shadow of Light (1977) ? Bill Brandt Da Capo Press | ISBN: 0306708582 Condition: Good | Sold by Crappy Old Books Photography. That remarkable invention which allows humanity to preserve fleeting moments, capture extraordinary beauty and provide permanent evidence that somebody once thought those trousers were fashionable. Most photographers attempt to reproduce the world as faithfully as possible. Bill Brandt, however, was considerably more interested in discovering what happened when light, darkness, perspective and imagination conspired to make ordinary reality look thoroughly unfamiliar. Welcome to Shadow of Light , a magnificent collection of photographs by one of Britain?s most influential twentieth-century photographers, a man whose ability to transform streets, landscapes, faces and human bodies into extraordinary visual compositions helped redefine the possibilities of the photographic image. Brandt?s work occupies a fascinating territory between documentary observation and artistic invention. His early photographs captured the contrasts of British society, from the privileged interiors of wealthy households to the industrial landscapes and working-class communities of the 1930s. Here was a country divided by class, wealth and circumstance, recorded through the lens of a photographer whose fascination with atmosphere and human experience extended well beyond straightforward social reporting. But Brandt was never content merely to document what stood before him. As his career developed, he increasingly experimented with dramatic lighting, unusual viewpoints and striking contrasts between black and white. Ordinary rooms became mysterious spaces, familiar landscapes acquired an unsettling grandeur, and the human figure could be transformed into an almost abstract arrangement of curves, shadows and unexpected shapes. His celebrated studies of nudes are particularly distinctive, employing extreme perspectives and wide-angle distortion to create images in which bodies become sculptural forms, sometimes appearing more like strange natural landscapes than conventional photographic portraits. Naturally, this required a certain willingness to disregard the traditional advice that a photograph ought to make its subject look normal. Brandt preferred something considerably more interesting. The title Shadow of Light perfectly captures his fascination with the relationship between illumination and darkness. In his photographs, shadows are not merely unfortunate areas where the lighting technician has failed to do his job. They are essential elements of composition, giving ordinary scenes mystery, tension and emotional depth. There is something wonderfully ironic about a photographer whose medium depends entirely upon light becoming so celebrated for his mastery of darkness. Yet Brandt understood that what a photograph conceals can be just as important as what it reveals. Originally published in 1966, Shadow of Light became a significant retrospective of Brandt?s photographic achievement, bringing together images that illustrate his remarkable versatility and distinctive artistic vision. This 1977 Da Capo Press edition , offered in Good condition by Crappy Old Books , is an appealing acquisition for collectors of photographic literature, students of twentieth-century visual culture and admirers of British documentary and fine-art photography. A fascinating visual journey through a world transformed by one man?s extraordinary eye, where industrial streets, elegant interiors, mysterious landscapes and human forms become exercises in atmosphere, imagination and artistic perception. Because while most people point a camera at something interesting and hope for the best, Bill Brandt understood that the real art lies in deciding what to reveal, what to hide and precisely where the shadows should fall. And proof that even the darkest corners of Britain can produce something beautiful. Provided, of course, somebody knows what they?re doing w. Seller Inventory # 7719
