Faint hint of a crease down the spine of the book.Dr Eugene Erdler, psychiatrist, and Samuel Winthrop, brain surgeon, both work at Grey Towers to which a hundred new patients a year are sent by the criminal courts for treatment in lieu of detention in prison. One of their guinea-pigs is an extraordinary man called Jeremy, who might be a temporal-lobe-epileptic or the victim of his early family life. When both men find themselves unable to handle him and Dr Erdler refuses to continue psychiatric treatment, Jeremy begins a persecution campaign centred on Fenella, Dr Erdler's wife. His ruthless and persistent persecution has one objective - to force Dr Erdler to take him back as a private patient. In the process he changes the lives of at least four people. This brilliant study of a patient locked in a struggle with his psychiatrist is a dramatic tour-de-force. That struggle, in which Samuel Winthrop becomes inextricably involved, leads to a complete reversal of roles - Dr Erdler and Fenella finding their own characters laid bare, their own motivations probed and analysed, and the carefully erected facade of their family life brought down.
