Review

"Just trust yourself, and you will know how to live", wrote the 19th-century philosopher Goethe. This is all very well and good if you live in a world in which trusting yourself is the norm, but holistic practitioner Suzanne Marbrook argues that the 20thh century brought about a decline in spiritual autonomy and with it a loss of personal trust. Thus, through her book, Meditations for Tranquillity, Marbrook aims to help the 21st-century reader work towards spiritual enlightenment by, among other things, "being in charge of all aspects of your life and accepting responsibility for the outcome of your actions".

The exercises and meditations in this book are based on Marbrook's own "proven" teaching techniques as an internationally respected holistic practitioner. The 25 meditations in the book are intended to focus thought through using the vibrations of form, colour and concepts in the images that accompany them. Both the meditations and the text are aimed at the attainment of balance and harmony.

Whether one is a complete sceptic, a true believer, or just falls between the two stools, Meditations for Tranquillity is a very interesting book. The exercises, which range from yoga postures and colour visualisation to dream therapy, are mind expanding and energising, and many of the messages, which lie hidden beneath Marbrook's sometimes verbose text, hit a chord.

In a market flooded with mind, body and spirit works, Suzanne Marbrook's book is both good value and an interesting read. Certainly, Meditations for Tranquillity should be beneficial to anyone wanting to have a more harmonious and balanced lifestyle. --Aruna Vasudevan
