Synopsis

"One World" is an international programme in four levels for the teaching of English as a foreign language to students at the junior secondary level. Levels 1 and 2 cover the Council of Europe's "Waystage" and levels 3 and 4 through the Cambridge "Preliminary English Test" and on towards the Cambridge "First Certificate in English" or equivalent examinations. "One World" aims to incorporate the best of tried and tested methodologies with an emphasis on communicative and innovative techniques, logical structure sequences, functional uses of language and skills development through task and performance based learning involving the active participation of students. Each level includes a student coursebook, practice book and cassettes, including song cassettes. Also included is a teacher's book which contains reproductions of students' coursebooks and an answer key. The coursebooks contain a syllabus showing major language features to be learned. They contain 26 units divided into an introductory unit, 20 main units and five revision units. The 20 main units contain 4 lessons each. Each lesson is designed to take from 45 to 60 minutes. The revision units take two class periods.

In total each level contains 90 to 100 hours of classroom work. The phonetic symbol next to the grammar/language reference highlights the specific sound(s) which may be dealt with in class time or in the Practice Book. The coursebooks contain a variety of language exercises to provide language practic at different stages of learning. There are language focus tasks which illustrate a change in form which students should look at and work out themselves, pair work and act out tasks which allow students to devise conversations. There is also a student grammar reference section and tapescripts for the audio casettes.
