Synopsis
The year 2014 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, and the beginning of the conflict that would become known as World War I. In addition to the devastating loss of human life, the Great War was also responsible for the destruction of historic buildings and monuments, the theft of precious artworks, and the burning of untold numbers of books. Ravaged uses this anniversary as a poignant gateway to a greater discussion of the effect of war on artistic heritage. Beginning with the Trojan War and weaving a compelling cross-cultural narrative that ends in the 21st-century Middle East, this affecting publication explores how cultural treasures often became silent victims of armed conflict. Illustrations highlight over two hundred artworks and relics, which are often featured alongside complementary written reflections from contemporary artists. About the Author
Jo Tollebeek is professor at the Faculty of Arts of the KU Leuven. Internationally recognized as author and as specialist, he has already published many academic works and books about cultural history. Eline van Assche is researcher and associate curator at the M-Museum, Leuven.

Founded in 1425, Leuven University shone during the sixteenth century attracting renowned humanists, Erasmus among them. Fittingly, the allegory of Mars and Minerva introduces the theme of artistic response to the destruction of art and culture during times of social conflict. The short essays circle about the human and material losses suffered by Leuven and other Belgian towns during the Great War and then spin to contemplate perceptions of the calamities brought about by religious, military, and political clashes exemplified by disparate events such as reformist fury in sixteenth-century Amsterdam; the incineration of Hiroshima; and the radicalization of Mao's China.
