Synopsis

Book Seven compiles rabbinic law on such topics as the planting of seeds and the propagation of domestic animals, specific tithes owed to priests and Levites, portions of crops to be consumed by the grower, the Sabbatical and Jubilee years, and the giving of gifts to the poor. Also included is Maimonides' formulation of the Eight Degrees of Charity. The laws codified here have guided the tradition of charity that continues to the present day in the Jewish community.

Book Seven of the Code of Maimonides deals with laws concerning agriculture: the planting and harvesting of crops; the offerings and tithes to be set aside for the priests and the Levites; the portions to be left standing for the poor; the Sabbatical year, when planting is forbidden and monetary debts are canceled; and the Jubilee year, when land must be restored by the present owner to its original owner, without reimbursement.
