Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Dust jacket illustration by Mike Roffe. (illustrator). First Edition. 165 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Tenth novel in the "Halfhyde" series. "After the debacle of Captain Watkiss' accidental death, Lieutenant St Vincent Halfhyde unexpectedly finds himself put on the half-pay list of Her Majesty's Navy. Appalled by the business of marriage, in which he unwittingly fell prey to an admiral's daughter of stern character, he decides to combine a reprieve from his wife and a desire to broaden his experience with a spell under sail, on a merchantman bound for Sydney. On a drunken evening in Liverpool the gullible Captain MacRafferty signs Halfhyde on as an able seaman; his ship, the 'Aysgarth Falls', has a crew mainly consisting of unseamanlike villains on the run from the police, led by a First Mate whose obvious dishonesty and bullying tactics immediately alarm Halfhyde. Bad weather and outbreaks of fighting in the fo'c'sle herald the dangers ahead. In his efforts to uncover a lucrative but illicit deal made between the First Mate and a mysterious passenger to be picked up off Chile, Halfhyde falls into the hands of unscrupulous captors who intend to sell him to his old enemy, Vice Admiral Paulus von Merkatz. The German flagship's inevitable presence in South American waters provides Halfhyde, aided by an English captain, with a chance to display his naval training and quick thinking as he hoodwinks von Merkatz and sets off in pursuit of the 'Aysgarth Falls', now several days ahead. Clashes between the three ships are unavoidable and it is not until they reach the treacherous shallows around the Great Barrier Reef of Australia that Halfhyde has a chance to try one of his most devious of stratagems." Faint cigarette odour, small light crease at fore-edge of pages 115 to 132, small shallow dint at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light edge browning - mainly at top inside edge and at top of flaps. Seller Inventory # 22359
