It as much to be wilhed that the word Gothic lhould not be ufe in (peaking of the architecture of England, from the thirteenth to the fixteenth century. The term tends to give fslfe ideas on the fub Jeét, and originates with the Italian writers of the fourteenth andj fifteenth centuries who applied the expreflion of La Maniera Gotica,' in contempt to all the works of art of the middle ages.
