Excerpt from Small Accumulators, How Made and Used: An Elementary Handbook for the Use of Amateurs and Students
The subject of small accumulators has been selected for treatment in this, the first of a series of popular scientific hand-books for students and engineers, by reason of the large number of requests for advice which have reached me in my capacity as editor of The Model Engineer and Amateur Electrician. Although some of the information herein con tained has already appeared in the pages of that journal, I believe that the connected and amplified form in which this is now presented will. Make it of greater utility and more con venient for reference. Sufficient matter has been added to make the book cover the ground indicated by its title as fully as is possible, but the limited space available precludes any pre tence to exhaustive treatment of the subject. I venture to hope, however, that this little vol ume will be found a practical and trustworthy.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book dives into the fascinating world of small accumulators, also known as storage or secondary batteries. The author, writing in response to numerous requests for guidance, delves into the history of accumulator development, starting with Grove's gas battery and tracing the path to Plante's groundbreaking work with lead plates in a sulphuric acid solution. The book then guides readers through the process of making their own four-volt pocket accumulator and a more powerful twelve-volt accumulator, providing detailed instructions for crafting everything from the case to the plates and electrolyte. The author explores the practical considerations of accumulator use, including the importance of understanding charging voltage, current, and time, as well as the dangers of over-discharging. Readers will also discover a wealth of applications for small accumulators, from powering night lights and small motors to illuminating bicycles, carriages, and even theatrical sets. This book provides a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the theory, construction, and applications of accumulators, offering insights into a technology that, while less visible in the modern world, played a pivotal role in the early development of electricity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
