Il n'est pas inopportun de dire comment ce livre s'est fait. En poursuivant quelques études sur l'bis toire du Forez, j'ai tout d'abord rencontré nos vieux auteurs, et l'idée m'est venue de réunir des notes sur leurs ouvrages, mais sans aucune intention de les uti liser un jour pour un catalogue de leurs oeuvres. Ce pendant ces premiers résultats m'ayant mis en goût, comme il arrive, j'ai apporté à ces recherches plus de suite, de méthode et de zèle, et je n'ai plus laissé passer aucune occasion d'ajouter à mon petit trésor, toujours sans tr0p savoir quel usage j'en ferais. C'est ainsi que ce recueil est allé grossissant d'année en année, jusqu'à remplir enfin six ou sept gros cahiers.
