Excerpt from Indian Territory, Descriptive, Biographical and Genealogical: Including the Landed Estates, County Seats Etc., Etc., With a General History of the Territory
Indian Territory has sustained within its confines men who have been prominent in diplomacy for half a century. The annals teem with the records of strong and noble manhood, and, as Sumner has said, the true grandeur of nations is in those qualities which constitute the greatness of the individual. The final causes which shape the fortunes of individuals and the destinies of States are often the same. They are usually remote and obscure, and their influence scarcely perceived until manifestly declared by results. That nation is the greatest which produces the greatest and most manly men and faithful women; and the intrinsic safety of a community depends not so much upon methods as upon that normal development from the deep resources of which proceeds all that is precious and permanent in life. But such a result may not consciously be contemplated by the actors in the great social dram-a. Pursuing each his personal good by exalted means, they work out as a logical result.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the phenomenon of language's influence on the visual arts within Western culture. The author traces its roots in the ancient Greek concept of "mimesis," the idea that art imitates nature, and follows its evolution through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, where language was seen as a tool for describing and interpreting the visible world. By exploring key artistic movements and analyzing specific works of art, the book demonstrates how language influenced artistic style, technique, and meaning-making processes. Ultimately, it sheds light on the profound interplay between these two distinct modes of communication, highlighting the power of language to shape our perception and understanding of visual imagery.
