Excerpt from Design and Method of the Sociological Research in the Grand Canyon, Vol. 1: River Contact Study; Final Report
The River Contact Study was contracted in April, 1974, to assess the sociological effects of different management alternatives on the nature and quality of the river experience in the Grand Canyon. Initially, the project was focused on the effects of motorized travel and different use levels. In the spring of 1975, concern over differences in private and commercial use prompted the Park Service to include this issue within the scope of the study.
The final report is organized into four major sections. The first is a description of the study design and implementation, including measurement techniques, sampling, and data collection. Parts II, III, and IV consider in turn the motor-oar, use levels, and private-commercial issues. The sections are bound separately to make them more easily available to those with specific interests.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the sociological journey of the Grand Canyon River through a longitudinal sociological study performed in 1974. This research was commissioned in response to concerns about changing river use and its impact on the quality of the experience of the river. The study set out to examine three main areas; motor and oar trip preferences; different levels of use; and private and commercial trip distinctions. The resulting data captures a unique snapshot in time, providing a valuable historical benchmark against which future research into river use can be compared. It also offers insights into the evolving nature of the river trip experience, demonstrating how the river's allure not only provides a unique experience for travelers but also highlights a broader tension between wilderness preservation and accessibility. Through its multi-faceted approach, this book contributes to our understanding of the interaction between humans and the natural world, making it a valuable resource for scholars and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
