Excerpt from Early Christian Inscriptions in the Bennett Museum of Christian Archaeology
The school and the church are deeply indebted to the founder of the Museum, who prefers to remain unnamed and who in this unique and serviceable way pays tribute to the beloved teacher and friend of his student days. The collection is already the most extensive of its kind in this country and it is in contemplation to add to its treasures from time to time and to engage the services of a curator in order that its use may be extended to other educational institutions and, to the public. Such a collection bringing vividly before us as it does the life and customs of the early Christian community has value not only for the student of history; it is a source of immediate and lively curiosity and interest on the part of every Christian community who cannot be otherwise than moved and instructed in the presence of these silent testimonies to the Christian faith.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book showcases an extraordinary collection of original early Christian archaeological inscriptions, offering a glimpse into the lives and values of believers from the 3rd and 4th centuries CE. Assembled from the Catacombs of Rome during the early 20th century, these inscriptions are presented with meticulous care, accompanied by the author's expert commentary and analysis. Christian burials of this period often featured inscriptions expressing faith, affection, or remembrance, and these are no exception. While some of these inscriptions bear familiar Christian symbols, such as the fish and the monogram of Christ, others present fascinating insights into the early Christian community through their simplicity and lack of ornamentation. Through in-depth examination of the inscriptions' Latin, the author reveals the richness and diversity of the early Christian experience. The use of Christian symbols, the varying quality of Latin, and the range of emotions expressed in the inscriptions all contribute to a vivid tapestry of early Christianity. This unique collection of inscriptions adds a valuable perspective to our understanding of the beliefs and practices of the early Christian community, making it a valuable resource for scholars, theologians, and anyone interested in the history of Christianity.
