J'ai voulu, dans les pages qui suivent, reprendre précisément la méthode que cer tains inclinent à délaisser. Loin d'en atté nuer le prétendu défaut, je l'ai délibéré ment accru en donnant plus de place aux considérations empiriques. Le mélange signalé comme un manque d'unité n'en sera que plus apparent; j'espère toutefois qu'il ne passera pas pour de la confusion. Car au fond les deux parties, abstraite et concrète, sont parfaitement distinctes. Celle-ci sert de support à celle-là. Les don nées expérimentales précèdent et motivent les théories analytiques; elles les maintien nent dans la région du réel, hors de la quelle les plus brillants exercices de calcul sont décevants.
