On n'ignorait plus les graves embarras du Roi catholique et de son lieutenant. Aussi le bruit était-il généralement répandu, même en France et en Angleterre, qu'ils voulaient s'accorder avec les rebelles. Bien que Requesens affectât une fierté extrême vis à vis des médiateurs officieux qui voulaient s'interposer pour mettre un terme à la lutte, il désirait réellement un accommodement; mais il ne se dissimulait point que les derniers succès des pro vinces révoltées et les sympathies témoignées au prince d'orange rendraient un accord bien difficile. Il avouait au Roi que les ré belles ne se soumettraient qu'à la dernière extrémité. Or dans les provinces encore fidèles, on disait ouvertement qu'on obhgerait Philippe II à terminer la guerre en ne donnant plus d'argent.
