Synopsis

Excerpt from A Note on the "Junius" Controversy

Another writer who supported the anti-franciscan view was the late Mr. Abraham Hayward.1 It is to him that refer the remarks I have already quoted on the needless bitterness with which the controversy has been carried on. By him, says Mr. Stephen, a Franciscan was always mentioned in terms such as a severe theologian might apply to a Muggletonian, or others to an ignorant and perverse fool. In all cases Hayward writes in the dashing, self-confident fashion of a Quarterly reviewer; and though, doubt less, many of his criticisms are sound and many of his objections ingenious, it is true also that a large proportion of his assertions are assertions only, and unsupported by valid evidence.
