Quatorze heures. Bar-le-duc. Trois autos nous attendent et emportent pour Verdun nos provisions de jambon, pâtés, pou lets, vins, car on nous a conseillé de ne compter sur rien et de nous débrouiller. Bientôt, arrêt au bourg de où est le Quartier Général. Nous stoppons devant le double escalier exté rieur, aux marches de pierre, de la mairie historique où travailla Pétain, où médite Nivelle. Sur la place, des prisonniers Boches ratissent la boue qui commence ici, avec les premiers aspects de la guerre. On repart. Sur la route, le va-et - vient ininterrompu, montant et descendant, de longs convois de camions automo biles, tout le long du chemin. De temps en temps, un barrage de cantonniers, qui réparent et empierrent la voie militaire, com pliqueetretarde la circulation du courant, continu, des voitures de ravitaillement, pinard et munitions pour les hommes, obus pour alimenter les canons, les gueules des monstres. Ici, dans un champ, s'élève un grenier de ces énormes projectiles explosifs, sur un plancher de madriers qui les isole des flaques d'eau. Ce sont encore des baraquements ou des villages, pleins de soldats, dans le crépuscule en train de se répandre. Par les portières de l'auto, j'aperçois des toits crevés, un mur qu'a défoncé un passage d'obus, des fenêtres aux vitres cassées. Et, tout d'un coup, dans un enfoncement, parmi ces paysages vaguement ma melonnés, c'est Verdun, la résistance, la Ville Sacrée, et, par la porte qui donne accès, presque directement, dans la citadelle, c'est son coeur invincible.
