Excerpt from Study Arithmetics, Vol. 5
The men in the picture are getting a big transport plane ready to carry a heavy load across the ocean. Soon the motors will be started. When they are warmed up and running smoothly, the pilots, the navigator, and all the other members of the flying crew will get into the plane. Then the flight will start.
Getting an airplane ready for a flight takes very careful work and checking by many people. Before the plane leaves the ground, the pilots, the mechan ics, and many other workers must be sure that the motors and instruments are working properly and that everything is in order.
Of course you know some of the duties of the pilots on a large plane. What are some of the duties of the navigator?
