Dancing, to be sure, did; not disappear from the scene, but it headed the list of pastimes that were frowned upon. The contradances and quadrilles (or cotillions as they were incorrectly called) were tolerated, and as time went on, a few brave or bold souls danced the gallopade (which one critic called the frantic hurley and the wicked waltz.
