This book studies a peculiar effect observed with certain bright lines in the spectra of diverse elements, first recorded with the echelon grating and dubbed the "grid" structure. It predominantly focuses on the lithium spectral line at 6104 angstroms, where the effect is especially noticeable. The author's approach is primarily experimental, involving the use of vacuum tubes and a variety of excitation techniques to manipulate the conditions that give rise to the grid structure. Observations made with the echelon grating are then compared with those obtained from a plane grating and a Lummer plate, and secondary maxima are considered as a possible explanation for the observed phenomena. The author concludes that the grid structure is built upon a simple doublet structure and that only lines that broaden considerably with increasing excitation can exhibit this effect. The book then discusses the implications of these findings for the study of line structure and the limitations of the echelon grating in this context.
