Per essa tuttavia non mi'pare opportuno ricorrere, come altri ha proposto, all'antico nome Pasania, che s'incontra la prima volta in Plinio e da cui è derivato l'attuale di Fezzàn, perchè esso indica propriamente un arcipelago di oasi abbastanza precisato e distinto, dal quale non si può estendere su tutto il territorio che consideriamo, senza che perda, nonchè precisione, 1' intrinseco suo significato. Le oasi del deserto infatti, come apparivano allo stesso Erodoto, sono in tutto simili alle isole del mare: unità singole o gruppi ed arcipelaghi, chei caratteri del frazionamento e del netto distacco dalla superfice ambiente individuano, ed a cui spetta pertanto un proprio nome.
