Excerpt from American Geology, Containing a Statement of the Principles of the Science, Vol. 1: With Full Illustrations of the Characteristic American Fossils, Also an Atlas and a Geological Map of the United States
In regard to the Taconic system, Ido not know that I am indebted to any one for favors, or for suggestions. Indeed, nothing very flattering has ever been said, or published, respecting the views lhave maintained upon this subject. But I have the pleasure of knowing that a few of my friends, and those, too, who have the best Opportunities for judging of facts, if they do not agree with me in every particular, still agree with me in the main, respecting the relation of the Taconic system to the Lower Silurian. It is not for me to express an Opinion how this question will be received by geologists now, or whether lhave stated my views in the form best calculated to establish my positions. Geologists of higher abilities than myself would probablv ha\ e succeeded better in placing the evidence on record; still, the most important facts will be found in the work and. Ultimately, they must exert an influence in favor Of the doctrines I have stated; for I have full faith in them, and believe that they are founded upon established principles, and can not be set aside.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive view of the field of American geology in the mid-19th century. The author dedicated their life to unraveling the mysteries of the Taconic System, a complex and hotly debated geological theory of the time. Through their exploration and analysis, they present compelling evidence for the existence and importance of this unique set of rocks, arguing that the Taconic System represents a crucial and ancient period in the development of our planet. The text argues that the Taconic System, composed largely of limestone and other sedimentary rocks, is distinct from the prevalent metamorphic rocks of the day. By examining these and other geological formations, the author sought to shed light on the composition and history of the Earth's crust. Through detailed analysis of fossils and physical characteristics, this book further reveals the complex geological story of the continent, providing insights into the evolution of life and the Earth's physical structure.
