Excerpt from Der Briefwechsel Des Mutianus Rufus
Haufen nach innern Merkmalen in der nrspriìnglichen Folge wiederherzuetellen. Ein grosser Teil dieser Briefe (sie um fassen die Jahre 1505 - 1515, nur der letzte Brief, scheinbar ein zufàlliges Anhàngsel, ist aus dem Jahre 1521) besteht aber ans ganz vertraulichen, rein persònlichen Mitteilungen Mutians an seinen nur wenige Stunden entfernt wohnenden Freund H. Urban, Mitteilnngen tiber unbedeutende Vorfàlle des alltàglichen Lebens, untermischt mit belehrenden philo sophischen Unterhaltungen, angeknfipt't an dies oder jenes Erlebnis oder an die Lektiire eines Buches, ohne deutliche Merkmale dcr Abfassungszeit; dazu im einzelnen ott schwer verstèindlioh wegen der behutsamen Ausdrucksweise oder wegen des weiten Auseinanderliegens zusammengehòriger Nummern. Nur wo die grossen Tagesfragen wie der Bench linische Streit oder die Erfurter Gemeindeangelegenheiten ihre Streifiichter werl'en, lasst sich mit annàhernder Sicher heit durch Zuhùlfenahme anderweiter bekannten Daten der chronologische Faden finden. Als erschwerend tritt der Umstand hinzu, dass nur der eine Teil des Briefwechsels, nemlich die Briefe Mutians an Urban, nicht auch die des letztern an jenen erhalten sind, sowie endlich. Dass die ver schiedenen Jahrgange nur liickenhaft und in ganz ungleicher Vollstàindigkeit vorliegen.
