C'était pour l'écra ser qu'il régnait; et c'était pour mieux atteindre ce but, pour mieux cacher ses veritables desseins, qu'il suivait une marche tortueuse, qu'il gardait souvent un silence équivoque, ou qu'il affectait une condescendance qui était bien loin de sa pensée. Mais tout à coup on le voyait se redresser et manifester sa volonté avec une implacable énergie.
