Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, widely influential on literary analysis, explores the nature of different arts through the lens of imitation. The author, a notable philosopher, delves into the essence of poetry, music, dance and other creative expressions. He categorises these arts based on their medium, object and manner of imitation, highlighting distinctions between tragedy and comedy, painting and sculpture. The author then examines how the objects of imitation vary, discussing the representation of higher and lower types of human character. Beyond categorising the arts, this book examines their origins and development, tracing the evolution of tragedy from its roots in religious rituals to its sophisticated form. The author also explores the concept of catharsis in tragedy, arguing that it provides a unique emotional release for audiences. This book remains a foundational text in literary theory, offering a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the nature and purpose of art.
