Excerpt from Report of a Committee of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences on Ventilators and Chimney-Tops: March, 1848
Tn main object in conducting the following experiments has been, to investigate the principles upon which the successful action of ventila tors depends. By a knowledge of these principles, ingenious artisans will undoubtedly be enabled to construct forms much superior to any new in use. Incidentally, forms have been pointed out by the Com mittee as superior to any other they have submitted to experiment. These forms have since been examined in their working state, of full dimensions, and found in their comparative results to correspond with those obtained from the models. The experiments may therefore be considered as confirmed by practice.
