Commodianus ubi natus sit uel uitam degerit et qua usus sit fortuna, parum constat. De aetate eius maior est consensus; nam quin media fere parte tertii post Christum sacculi car mina sua conposuerit, non iam dubium uidetur esse Quae autem scripsit, ea Christianis illorum temporum, si licet ex silentio facere coniecturam baud multum arrisisse apparet. Neque id mirum; tunc enim illi iam assuerant praeter rerum ueritatem sermonis quoque elegantiam spectate, quam in Com modiane non potcrant non desiderare.
