Excerpt from Vinaya Texts: Part I. The Pâtimokkha; The Mahâvagga, I-IV; Part II. The Mahâvagga, V-X; The Kullavagga, I-III
It is impossible to frame any narrower definition of the Vinaya than this, since the gradual change of circumstances in the Fraternity resulted in a gradual change also in the Vinaya itself. To give any more detailed account of what the Vinaya is, it will be necessary to trace what can be at prment ascertained of its history; to show - that is, so far as it is yet possible to do so - the causes which led to the establishment of the oldest Rules and Ceremonies of the Order. And to follow step by step the accretions of new literary work around this older nucleus.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex history and development of the Vinaya Pitaka, a key text in Buddhist literature that sets forth rules for the outward life of Buddhist monks. Examining the origins of the Vinaya, the author delves into its oldest forms, including the Patimokkha, a liturgical formula used for confession and atonement, and the Kammavakas, words of ordination. By analyzing the structure and content of these texts, the author sheds light on how the Vinaya evolved over time, with later additions and commentaries building upon the earliest foundations. The book highlights the importance of understanding the Vinaya's historical context, emphasizing the impact of Brahmanical traditions and the rise of different monastic schools in shaping Buddhist practice. The author also examines the role of memory and oral transmission in preserving the Vinaya, eventually leading to the development of written records. This exploration offers a fascinating glimpse into the early evolution of Buddhist monasticism and the profound influence of tradition and oral culture on the formation of Buddhist scripture.
