Excerpt from Marquesan Legends
In rendering the Marquesan into English I have sought to give literal translation and to preserve the native idiom as well as possible, without making the English grotesque, rather than to give a smooth English version. The tales are essentially Marquesan in character - rugged and rough. If there are any that deserve rendering into polished English, such transformed versions should appear elsewhere than in a volume that seeks to preserve the lore in its unvarnished integrity.
