Excerpt from The Odes of Pindar in English Prose, With Explanatory Notes, Vol. 1 of 2: To Which Is Added West's Dissertation on the Olympic Games
IT is remarked by Dr. Johnson, that those authors should be read at schools, which supply most axioms of pmdence and most principles of moral truth. This being the case, it must be granted, that the study of Pindar ought to form an indispensable part of classic education; for, although some of the ancient poets may, perhaps, equal him in sublimity of conception, it cannot be denied, that in the moral tendency of his compositions, and the spirit of devotion, which animates his poems, he soars above all other writers, whether of Greece or of Rome.
